I have a non-MESH computer (this problem is Microsoft-originated and specifically deals with AMD 64 processors) with a AMD64 3200+ running on a K8V SE Deluxe Asus motherboard. I ran into the same problem as all the above dudes, but I was unable to even boot into safe mode after installing SP2. Here's my solution, which took probably nearly 18 hours of research and trial/error to figure out:

-I slipstreamed SP2 onto a WinXP Pro SP1 install CD (legal), and reinstalled windows (a repair installation, technically)

-After installing, as it is trying to boot up for the first time, I booted from the windows CD again and went into the Recovery Console.

-In the recovery console, I used the listsvc command to sort through all the drivers and such that Windows is loading upon boot. There is one called "intelppm", which is set up to load w/ windows. I ran the command "disable intelppm", which keeps that driver from loading. I exited the console, rebooted normally, and everything went well from there.

This is basically the same fix as the registry edit, but this is a way to get at it if you were stuck like I was without being able to boot into safe mode. I guess the boys at MS were all using Intel equipment, so they wouldn't notice that SP2 tries to load Intel processor drivers before AMD drivers, hence crashing an AMD computer during boot.

The mesh fix is simply a .reg file with the following in it:-

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesintelppm]
"Start"=dword:00000004

You need to install SP2, boot up in safe mode and double clcik on the .reg file above to add the info to the registry......... then reboot.

It worked for me

Cursor XP might be the root of your problem. I had a similar experience. I basically started over from scratch and when I went to load Stardock's Cursor XP it went all buggy. Then after I did some more investigation I found that the combination of Cursor XP, Athlon64, and SP2 is a volitle combination.

Go to Mesh site they have a fix for installing from Microsoft site or from CD. It worked for me.

I get same thing as Tom. Mesh Athlon 64 3200 etc. XP working fine before installing SP2 (from official MS CD). thence will not boot, only goes to the DOS like screen offering safemode, boot normally etc etc only thing that worked was safe mode then restore to few days ago. Put CD on the shelf and decided at my age life is just too short for SP2.
