Works like a Charm. For me.

didn't work for me either....says its protected

I have a question that probably exposes my ignorance.

Both the WinAmp and later Virtuosa conversion schemes worked and then stopped working for me.

How does Napster disable the conversion? Are they changing the WMAs or are they getting into my computer and changing the programs or DLLs?
  • Anonymous · 4 years ago
what you might want to try is get lame 3.97a7, pull out the lame encll file and put it into the mpeg file in virtuosa. thats how ive been running it and it still works. :)
  • ...... · 4 years ago
This thing doesn't work for me either...can anyone give any suggestions???
  • Anonymous · 4 years ago
can someone explain in detail how to configure that lame file into virutosa so i can use this other method since winamp failed
  • AlexTheBeast · 4 years ago
The new lame plug-in only makes conversion quicker/better. If Virtuosa is not working, changing the plug-in will not help.

    Won't work for me

the crack for coverting protected files to unprotected don't work anymore i just tryi it out

Any one know of another way to load the files to CD or convert it to MP3 seems Virtuosa stoped working

Although it is slow, this link for this version works...

The Virtuosa hack doesn't currently work anymore does anyone have a new suggestion?
  • leodavinci · 4 years ago
I'm having the same problem. I would imagine the older version of 5.0 Virtuosa would work if someone has a copy of it. Can you post a copy? I can provide web space if needed.

Log-in or leave an email address. If you honestly have web space, I bet somebody would still have a copy of the old version for you to post.

The Link works for Virtuosa V5.0, but the conversion doesn't work anymore... Does anyone know any other possible ways to fix this problem? we need to free ourselves....
  • Anonymouse · 4 years ago
The wma converting Virtuosa 5.0 is still out there. Try a google search for virtuosa Download, and try all of them. If the download is coming from virtuosa.com (as most are) it will be the new version which wont work. I was able to find it, so I know you folks can too. The secod I post a link to it, it will be pulled from the site, so do some legwork to get it.

Sometime today either Napster or Virtuoso made a change in their software which eliminates file conversion of protected WMA content. I personally suspect it was Napster through a software upgrade forced over the weekend (perhaps in prep for what has happened today).

Attempts to convert music as of today result in the progress bar sticking at 0%, with no conversion possible.

I guess it's time to look for Plan C.
  • none · 4 years ago
working for me / when i got the correct (old) version and installed it over the (new) version... now i can make MP3 CDs for the car!

    thx all
  • joe · 4 years ago
it worked for me last night, went to use it this morning after downloading more napster songs, and when i go to convert, it stays stuck at 0%.
  • tom · 4 years ago
    Yep,

Happened to me too. Napster said there was a software update today.

Virtuosa will no longer convert. Stays at 0%.

Tried re-installing V. but no difference.

Might try & uninstall Napster, but doubt that will fix anything.

The software using the DRM protected file, in order to comply with the DRM must make contact with the license issuer. (napster in this case)

Checking for approval with napster before access, and probably sending an application ID, which is now being refused by napster.

The software update most certainly happend internally at napster and any attempts to reinstall will prove fruitless, since this software update is not client side.

wud uninstallin napster/virtuousa and installin the old v work?
  • tom · 4 years ago
I tried Installing the old version of Virtuosa on a computer that never had Napster installed. Pulled files from over network, still won't work.
Needs to check for license, so SOL.
  • NobodyNo · 4 years ago
it was working like a charm for me untill i tried to use it today. i'm getting the same 0% issue. While reading up on it, i read where napster "wasn't too concerned about it" ....However it looks like they were a little more concerned about it than they were leading on. I had no idea what was going on untill i retraced my steps here and read the new posts. Well Guys, i guess it's back to the drawing board once more....

Does it help if I backed up my licenses from WMP? After all, my 14-day trial on Napster is coming to an end. If I backed up my licenses now, can I still play the audio files after I have gotten rid of Napster? I burned these files as data files, instead of audio, on a couple of CDs. Maybe I can burn these songs someday, right? I would greatly appreciate your help on this subject. It angers me to think that these scumbags would protect that which is meant for the people anyway.

To keep things easy and anonymous, you can post one (or more) of the WMA tracks that's giving the 0% problem in Virtuosa to http://www.rapidshare.de/

You just browse your drive for the file and it should host it for you for free (up to 30 megs). There aren't any names attached with the service as far as I know.

If possible, ZIP or RAR up 2 tracks so that if the "fix" works for one of the tracks, I can check it with the other one to see if works with it also.

try that. If one song works then I will add more.

Penn State was the first university to sign with napster last year. Every student up here has been using winamp and virtuosa. Now all 40,000 kids pissed off at University Park campus!!!! I hope someone figures out a new way.

    Thanks

Thanks for posting those files everyone. I started by looking at Virtuosa v5.1 and seeing what the warning messages might be. After tracing with a debugger for a few hours, I wound up looking more at WMVCore.dll's code than anything else. I just downgraded to v5.0 so I can see the 0% progress bar problem.

What I've noticed so far is that for the tracks posted, their times are all 00:00 in Virtuosa. That's why they won't play or convert. If the routine that does the coversion uses the track's time to control a loop (which it might, I'm not sure yet), then 00:00 isn't a good thing.

When you open a WMA DRM file you download from Napster in Virtuosa, does it show 00:00 for the track time under "Properties" or does it show the track's real time?
  • Anonymous · 4 years ago
Never mind, I answered my own question!

Since I don't have the license data for those Napster songs, they all show up as 00:00 timed just like they should. I grabbed some protected WMA files from a friend that had a public license file, and tried to import those into Virtuosa. With the correct license, the file import and file playback work perfectly. However, the conversion in v5.0 doesn't even get to the 0% progress bar problem. It tells me that the conversion is unauthorized because the original content is secure.

New theory: there's a setting that can be switched on or off while making DRM WMA files that allows the security to be more "relaxed" such that Virtuosa can convert them to MP3. Napster could have been using the relaxed mode up until they caught on to the Virtuosa problem.

    I'm going to investigate further..

this no longer works. old news.

Through some seaching on my best friend google. i was able to find a program that WORKS. I have tried it and it works on my ipod. just google "tunebite". Make sure to import the lame!!!!!!! One bad thing is it's conversions are in real time. 3min song takes 3min. however, i deleted everything because i realized that Jacko has to put food on his table unlike mine. ha ha

    Here's what I found out:

Microsoft's DRM is actually, for a change, really well thought out. The XML header content at the top of every protected WMA file just can't be changed because it's digitally signed using either ECC or RSA. The same thing goes for the actual license files and corresponding keys.

Another feature of the DRM system is its ability to revoke licenses of software vendors. That's what happened to Virtuosa. Once Napster found out about the hack, they updated their licenses so that if Virtuosa tried to open them, that action wouldn't be allowed by the DRM system's back-end (Microsoft controlled). They might have updated something else, but that means that even if we were to "fix" Virtuosa, when it went to open the protected WMA stream, it would be denied by Microsoft's 'in-between' modules.

In short: Virtuosa is out, and real-time encoding is back in (ie: TuneBite).

Thanks to everyone who posted files. I'm sorry if I got your hopes up :(
  • Anonyomous · 4 years ago
Well, I have been all over the internet trying for ways to get around DRM. But this led me to loops for days and days. Until I started thinking a little differently. I thought, well, if I cannot remove the DRM, then there has to be a way to obtain burning rights somehow. When I tried to burn the WMAs using Nero, it would say something like 'Not enough licenses to burn.' Long story made short, I ended up on Microsoft's website (sometimes, you have to keep your enemies closer, right? Go to the source of the problem.). I ended up on this link that uses Visual Basic to encode a DRM protected file. If there is anyone out there who has some Visual Basic programming experience, this might help. I'm not trying to build anyone's hopes up, but rather encourage people to perhaps change their methods of trying to get around the DRM protection, because, let's face it, people with crappy soundcards like mine will never enjoy tunebite. I might ask my dad if he can do it, since he has been a programmer for the past 16 years. Only problem is that he is out of the country for a while and I'm not sure if he has the time anyway. Well, my friends, check it out and see if it is something big.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?u... (This is to encode a file with DRM protection. If there is a way to encode a file with DRM protection, maybe the same program will remove it. Maybe there is a way to obtain burning rights somehow, too.)

http://s.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/sof... (This website shows the use of protected files. I'm sure some of you may have already seen this page, but maybe there is something there that we are all missing. Check it out again.)
  • Anonymous6969 · 4 years ago
How about these websites by Microsoft? I had just posted the reply above about using Visual Basic to try to re-encode a file. How about trying to come up with a phony license that tricks the file into being unlocked enough to burn? There are DVD ripper programs that get around Macrovision and other scrambling devices. There has to be one for audio. There are chained licenses and simple licenses. DRM 10 can use either. The website says "A chained license is composed of a leaf license and a root license. The leaf license unlocks the content, and the root license unlocks the leaf license. In order to access the content, the DRM component of the player must locate both the root and leaf licenses to complete the chain. Windows Media DRM 10 supports both simple and chained licenses. The root license and the leaf license each contain a set of rights. Both licenses must be valid and both must allow the actions that are being requested. For example, to play content using a chained license, the root and leaf licenses must contain the right AllowPlay = True. If either the root or leaf license expires, the user cannot access the content until that license element is renewed." Come on, you great programmers. I'm sure one of you can write a program that unlocks DRM 10. I hope that you don't lose your determination. There must be someone out there who is MCSE or MCSA certified or something like that and knows about unlocking such content. Check out this website below. I hope it helps. I wish I could do more.

Im far from a computer programmer so this may be a stupid question, but would it be possible to open the WMA file in the form of data, tweak some of the code then save it? I opened a WMA file with note pad and at the top is a bunch of stuff that looks to me like copyright crap. Not sure, but just a though.

    Hey
I was up all night browsing looking for a program or a way to remove the wma protection but no luck. does anybody knows where to look?? :?
  • bigpaynis · 4 years ago
If you download the full version of AV VCS Voice Changer Diamond 4.0 you can stream directly off napster and save any song in real time, mp3 format. It took me 6 hours to figure that out.
  • Guest #2 · 4 years ago
Is there anyway to make a program that will make Napster think that Virtuosa is not the program running it? For example, run Virtuosa and this other program and have the other program send the data to Napster saying it is WMP or something like that.

Does anyone know if the sound quality is affected using tunebite? Thanks in advance.
  • Anonymous696969 · 4 years ago
I used tunebite, but the only problem with that is that if you have a stock soundcard, like in my computer, your recording will be really bad qualilty. My recording was buzzing and had a lot of static. You would have to have a great soundcard to begin with and that would be another $100, at least. Tunebite records whatever goes through that soundcard as it is playing the song, so unless you have a pretty good soundcard, it is not worth it.
  • Anonymous · 4 years ago
with tune bite, click on the options tab. make sure the right input is selected (normally something like "stereo mix" or "wave"), then click on the auto detect button, it will adjust the recording volume, so that when it records it, its not in the red, and that it is in the green. if you don't adjust the volume, the quality will be bad/static sounding.
  • Anonymous · 4 years ago
ps, i have a stock sound card, a very crappy one, and its working great.

i can't use this computer to do music production i.e. cubase, but its working just fine with tune bite.

Yeah, im new with this whole napster, wma drm, mp3 thing! and man it's pissing me off! well i'm not sure how to do it but is there a way to transfer the drm wma's to a hard disk player that supports wma, or maybe a filter or another program to install on the hard disk player to allow them pass and play?
  • Anonymous6969 · 4 years ago
According to Microsoft, DRM 10 can use either a simple license or a chained license to protect files that use DRM 10. When I tried to burn these songs using Nero, it stated that there were not enough licenses to burn these songs. According to Microsoft, "A chained license is composed of a leaf license and a root license. The leaf license unlocks the content, and the root license unlocks the leaf license. In order to access the content, the DRM component of the player must locate both the root and leaf licenses to complete the chain. Windows Media DRM 10 supports both simple and chained licenses." Is there a program out there that someone can write that can make a generic root and leaf license to unlock all of these songs and make 'fake' burning licenses to burn the songs? I believe that Napster is using chained licenses because a simple license expires a song's playability after a certain amount of time and my songs still play, even though I have uninstalled Napster. I may be wrong, though. There should be something out there that someone can write that you can incorporate into the file, or if you click on the program, it will write a registry entry that will make 'fake' licenses that, basically, trick your CD burning software into thinking that it is authorized to burn these songs. When I buy WMAs from Musicmatch Jukebox, I put them in Nero and burned them. It worked just fine. When you right click on the song and go to Properties, you see that it is "Protected Content". How come these songs can burn? They have a license to burn. Once again, there must be a way to come up with 'fake' licenses that trick the software into burning these protected files. Or, there must be a way to trick the software into not seeking these licenses and just burning them. After all, they can burn them as data files. Just not audio.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/h...

P.S. I am sure you have all probably already done this, but I backed up all of my downloaded songs onto CDs as data files. So that when a crack does come out, you have these songs downloaded and you can burn them. I don't believe that they would update themselves to new DRM protection, as long as you are not connected to the internet when you do the crack.
  • Anonymous69 · 4 years ago
This is exactly what I mean when my above posts asked if there is a software that makes a 'fake' license. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find this drmdbg.exe file anywhere on the internet. Here is what a website says about it.

"DrmDbg.exe will pick up "KID" and "Seed" from PC's memory when user
playback DRM Protected contents , and make "xxxxx.key" file.
DRM2WMV will unlock ProtectedFile using "xxxxx.key"."
    http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/6021.cfm

    --Best wishes.

Ok, im not a programer but instead of tryign to use burning programs out there and trying to make a crack for them how about some one make a new burning program! this might not be possable but if it is and someone dose it then they can release it to people who need it!

Not a musician then I take it.

There are musicians out there that are FOR file sharing when used properly. I can see both sides. People are angry with the fact the RIAA, etc. are just suing people, therefore buying RIAA associated CDs helps fund lawsuits that may very well be against people who have next to no money, in fact many are. And having to pay a settlement of $1000 or whatever, may put people in serious debt. If they embraced the technology, and used the technology themselves, legally, that is waaay earlier, when the original Napster was still around, and did not use scare style tactics, and lowered CD prices as well, then there would be way less people that feel bitter about the RIAA. I will continue to avoid RIAA music, and support indie labels, ones that pay artists properly, etc, and have much more reasonable ticket prices. If the RIAA did as I said, I'd still buy major label music, because there are good artists on majors despite much of the drivel out there. And now the MPAA is in the same dilemma!

I've been using Nero Wave Editor since Napster blocked Virtuosa. I never tried TuneBite. I have never had that kind of problem- static, poor quailty recording. Anyone has problem with TuneBite, try Nero Wave Editor. I just play WMA files on Windows Media Player and record it to wave files by Nero Wave Editor. To me, there's not much quailty difference from a original file.

  • pennstateisthebest · 4 years ago
How do you use nero wave editor to convert the songs? has anyone had problems of tunebite cutting off the end of the song?

    thanks
  • Anonymous · 4 years ago
i believe that with napster to go, you still have to purchase the songs that you transfer to the device. i could be way off, because i never looked into it.

i have tunebite, and ive used it for over 100 songs now. just import the lame_enc.dll file, so that you can record to mp3, instead of .ogg files. no problems with it that i have found.
  • pennstateisthebest · 4 years ago
yea i did import that encoder...but some of the mp3s are cut off on the end about 5-10secs....or would that be from a cd burning software when put on a cd?
  • Anonymous · 4 years ago
i haven't had that problem, but it could happen. however, i've noticed that tunebite doesn't save the song unless the entire song plays, so it seems strange that it would cut the song off...
  • crravid · 4 years ago
I tried running tunebite on my system, using win2k, but as soon as I click "next" after clicking "trial" registration, the app closes down. Has anyone seen this issue? You cant even email tunebite from their website for support, this is about the only way I can get my songs to work from napster in my car stereo, what a rip off!
  • Anonymous · 4 years ago
napster to go is 15 dollars for unlimited songs on a mp3 device. possibly our way around. i dont have an ipod to try it on. but please post if you try and find it either succesful or unsuccessful

i have tunebite, and ive used it for over 100 songs now. just import the lame_enc.dll file, so that you can record to mp3, instead of .ogg files. no problems with it that i have found.</ul>

I have just started using tunebites. I used the autosense option and I set the bit rate to 128 (the original track being 128). The result was great! It was a little quieter than the original but it was very good quality. I then set the bit rate to 320 (also the original track being 128). I have to say that the result was identical to the original! Technicaly it is probably not as good as the original but hey, my ears can't tell the difference! Some people may not want to record at a bit rate of 320 and you would think that recording at this rate shouldn't make a difference but it works for me. I'm using a Creative 5.1 card and the "wave" setting in tunebites. I'm happy!!!

Alexthebeast: You should update the Virtuosa instructions like the Winamp ones, so no noobs read and get their hopes up, that is, if they read the edit first! Just a thought.

    Okay. Thanks!

lol i just read through 6 pages of old stuff trying it all, but i'm having the same damn problem as all of you. Using tunebite though its realtime and i've DL 4 gigs of songs, that would take days to go through :(

Check out MusicStacker for real time recording as well... only one day trial but even Download.com says it can be used for copying of protected files but they also say that you shouldn't use it for that reason... Worth a try.

I've been using Tunebite and it is working great except that a lot of the songs I have converted show the incorrect length of the song. Some of them show up as having a 30:00 or so time for a 4:00 song. When playing the song it plays the normal length then goes to the next song so I tried editing the start stop time on itunes but then it cut the song off for some reason. Has anyone had this problem?
  • Anonymous · 4 years ago
i had a similar problem, but when i played the converted mp3 in real player it fixed the time problem.

    iendu,

How do you "play WMA files on Windows Media Player and record it to wave files by Nero Wave Editor"?
  • Anonymous · 4 years ago
i did the music stacker thing and it sucks my left nut.
the volume is like less than half of what it should be. and i dont really want to make a 128bit file 320. that is a wate of space.

    That's the trick. You can't.

If want to be famous (infamous), you tell everybody how you did it. Better yet, you register, write a recipe about it. The blogs will pick it up... and your name will be spread far and wide.]

... and then napster will probably find a way to stop the program from working.

That's the way the world works! :)

im the one that jsut wrote "i figured it out" well now i made an account and have jsut submited the recipe, so hopefully it works for everyone.
i wasn't going to put it up but i was thinking about it and couldn't figure out how they could block it so figured why not let the world have their music. :)

if you want the current software i'm using right now, email me at ... <font color="red"><clip></font>just finished converting or unprotecting 200 wma files in 1 hour, no realtime recording and i guarantee you all the files i'm converted are drm protected and got them from napster...

Just was wondering if anyone found out a way around without using realtime methods, because my compuer really sucks with the real time method.

I found a workaround for the DRM technology.....

What you need is the program Creative MediaSource...... within this program is a really useful recording tool which allows you to encode MP3's according to "What U Hear" through the soundcard. I assume its used for recording mixes with a number of inputs. You load the downloaded WMA files of a certain Album into the play list and hit record. It makes a big mp3 of the entire Album which can easily be cut up.

I just downloaded 600+ songs last night and already have about 100 of those now in mp3.
The only problem is time, as you have to encode in realtime.

Anyway, another trick your visitors might be able to use.

    Hope this helps.

    Peace

I downlaoded TuneBite and obtained a key from... anyways... It works fine except for some songs cut in a little late because it didn't start recording until the song had played for a second or two.
  • Anonymous · 4 years ago
unfortunately I didn't know about the free way to get past the DRM protection, already payed for my Tunebite copy, but I am pleased with this piece of software.
Anyway, regarding the loss of 1-2 seconds of the song, I downloaded the latest version and it works just great, no missing parts. Maybe this helps the guys who already bought this software 8O

Having been one to get burned(pardon the pun) by MusicMatch v10 screwing my DRM files, and having alot of WMA proctected files, running tunebites on a computer other than the one you are having license rights problems on, worked wonderfully for me. Able to fairly quickly re-record my DRM protected .WMA files, and can one again have the ability to listen to all the music I paid for thru MusicMatch.

What MusicMatch truly needs is a way for a PC to re-build the Documents and Settings/AllUsers/DRM files on the <font color="red"></font>Affected<font color="#444444"></font>PC. After all we already paid for the WMA content, and should be able to run on PCs that once were activated to MusicMatch license retrieval! 8O

tunebite is great. $17 for tunebite, $5 for yahoo unlimited, etc = all the music you can find and want to do with as you want. definitely worth it and recommended.

i just read through the recent added recipe for removing DRM on the previous page, so thought i'd spread the word even more for tunebite. yeah, you gotta pay for it, but its cheap. it records 4x faster than all these real-time methods and it all stays digital so no loss of quality. and it automatically titles each song and puts them in artist/album folders or however you want them sorted by id tag. that feature beats any other way of doing it.

the audio out to audio in sounds similar to what i was doing for a couple months. i have a hi-md minidisc recorder, so i'd play the drm files on the computer and run a line to my minidisc. the minidisc player automatically breaks the songs when there is a gap so you don't need to divide them. then your music is ready to listen to on the go. or if you want mp3 you can upload the recording to the computer and convert to mp3. i'm sure if you have a hi-md you know this already, though.
similar process can be done with many mp3 players these days, and they'll record straight to mp3 so you're all set. only probably is you're recording through line in which is analog so the sound can potentially degrade, but its really not noticable. ok, this is long.

I found a program using the Virtual CD-RW method to convert protected music to unprotected formats on www.download.com . The program name is NoteBurner Audio Converter (http://www.noteburner.com). It worked perfectly on my computer. I cannot tell any difference between the original and converted music in terms of the music quality.
