Even more strange is the fact that official App Store apps (like Free Memory or iStat for example) have been able to show you a battery % meter since 2.0 on iPhone and iPhone 3G!!!

Just to note that this (as the title suggests) is for the 3G S only... iPhone 3.0 software (as indicated in the Tech Recipes link I followed to this page!) doesn't expose this on a standard iPhone 3G.
