This doe not work - ie8 hangs up halfway through the delete process and says that it cannot copy certain files.
  • speders7 · 1 week ago
Hi I get this same thing, have you fixed it yet?
  • nja6 · 1 week ago
Unfortunately I had to uninstall windows completely and reinstall it. I
tried working with Microsoft engineer for three days and we could not get
    IE8 cancelled.
Sorry I dont have better news for you.

You need to click the tick box near the top right that says "Show Updates"
It will then be listed and you can remove it.
  • THE.MACHINE · 1 year ago
To remove IIE on XP, which is not listed under add remove programs, you have to select Add/Remove Windows Components.

    HOW TO UNINSTALL UNDER VISTA:

    1) Go to Programs and Features
    2) On the left hand side, look under Tasks > Click "View Installed Updates"
    3) When it loads all of the updates > Look for "Windows Internet Explorer 8 beta"
  • ceax · 11 months ago
    Ty so mutch, worked! :D
  • IE8user · 11 months ago
    1. On Vista, make sure you click "View installed updates".
    2. On both Vista and XP, make sure you are looking for "Windows Internet Explorer 8" in the list of updates.

Then if it's really not listed, you can use a command line to uninstall (different commands for Vista vs XP). Step-by-step instructions are here:

Unfortunately in xp doesn't work (otherwise I d haven't searched for a solution). I find Windows Internet Explore 8 beta 2 and uninstalled.
After having rebooted I found IE8 again and... surprise: there's no more an uninstall option under control panel. No way to get back to IE7... and I need it at work!

    Here's a question:
Why do so many of you people asking for help, get so P.O.'d at the very people that are politely trying to help you? There are any number of reasons for similar problems, and some solutions may not work for everybody. There are also lot5s of different places you can go to find other solutions that may help.
I, for one, found my solution here. Thanks to "IE8User" for pointing me toward the article.
Thanks to all that provide their advice.
    Everybody else , just relax.
  • Nullen_Void · 11 months ago
I agree with you Sandman. You are trying to help and they just get PO'd

I have a better question. Why are so many people installing beta software on critical machines?
  • Josie · 10 months ago

Erm... nope, that doesn't work. When trying to reinstall IE7 after the methods described above for IE8 uninstall, a message pops up saying that a newer version of IE is installed, cannot continue.

i tried removing ie8 with the add/remove program and it won't remove. it also tells me that about 5 programs have been downloaded with ie8 and they won't work without it. I am so fed up with internet explorer. its BS.
  • Graywolf_ANF · 7 months ago
I have successfully un-installed IE8 frm my Windows XP. First, you need to un-install Service Pack 3 from your pc, because SP3 is the one that is blocking the IE8 Uninstallation!

    Go to: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249/
(To make things easier for you, I have copied the steps below):

To remove Windows XP SP3 from your computer, use method 2.

Method2: Use the hidden $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder.
Click Start, click Run, type this: c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
When the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Removal Wizard starts, click Next.
Follow the instructions on the screen to remove Windows XP SP3.

After SP3 has been removed and your pc has re-started, you now need to remove IE8:-

Alternative steps for Windows XP or for Windows Server 2003:
To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type Cmd.exe, and then press ENTER.
Inside the Cmd.exe window, type in the following command: %windir%\ie8\spuninst\spuninst.exe
Press ENTER to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.

After you have restarted your computer, your previous IE have already been automatically rolled back in. To check your IE version simply open Internet Explorer, click Help and then About Internet Explorer.

    Voila! It worked perfectly!

P/S. In case your previous IE was not rolled back in, simply install IE7 into your pc.

Super, and thank you very much for taking the time to help us.

(Even including the idiot trolls who didnt bother to read the alternate instructions you provided for Vista.)
  • Rick · 6 months ago
Ok what they say doesn't work. I tried. Best way to remove IE8 for XP is to go to start/search and type in IE8 and check hidden files and folders. The IE8 folder will pop up and click on it. Select spuninstal which will open up and show you the icon to uninstall IE8.

  • Neil · 6 months ago
Windows IE8 is not listed in the "Add or remove programs" area. Common sense.
  • Bob · 6 months ago
    Hi,

I removed IE8 as you suggested sbove. It was removed successfully, and IE7 became the default browser. But now every time I start IE7 it takes me to the Customize Your Settings page at http://runonce.msn.com/runonce3.aspx. After I select my settings and click on 'save your settings, it says "Settings were not able to be saved successfully." On the status line at the bottom of the page, it says 'Done, but with erros on page.'

How do I stop this webpage from coming up. I used IE7 several years before I mistakenly updated to IE8.

I have been running Windows XP since before it was released to the public (new machine) and now am at SP3. I have already installed the MS updates for this month.

Thank you in adavnce for your help.

    Bob

I HAVE THE SOLUTION FOR ABOUT 1/2 OF YOU----READ THE WHOLE FREAKING PAGE AND SEE IF YOU CAN FIGURE OUT THAT YOUR QUESTION WAS ANSWERED MONTHS AGO. THEN REALIZE THAT WHOEVER IS POSTING A REPLY TO YOU, ALO HAS TIME, THA T I ASSUME IS VALUED, AND SHOULDN'T HAVE TO REPOST SO THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO ACTUALLY READ OR APPLY YOURSELF!
Sorry, I had to vent. Here is my real question:

Ummm like, ummm, how do I reset IE8 back to IE7; there's no button?

JUST JOKING HERE AND WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO PROVIDE A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM THAT I GOOGLED. I AM SORRY THAT YOU HAVE HAD TO KEEP UP THIS EFFORT FOR 6+MONTHS. As for those of you who might actually noticed that I have insulted the hell out of you, I will offer a little advice that I have found useful for me (XP service pack 3): add/remove programs through the control panel sucks and it lacks on my system until, well, I become hostile enough to lash out a forum posters, so I have downloaded a simple cleaner that zips through the uninstall process and then scans to clean all from one app. so I often don't even get prompted to reboot in order to remove the last lingering pieces of any program. I think that the real name is just CCleaner, it is free, and there are "settings" that allow you to do things like: show updates, hide windows components, view entire start up menu. Good luck.
  • Steve · 5 months ago
After installing IE8, when I log in, I get a complete blank screen (except for the screen saver), no icons, no start, no nothing and then I get a "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close...." How do I get rid of IE8 when I can't even get to my start button?
  • Chuck · 5 months ago
Solution does not work - zi followed them, supposedly IE9 was removed, but when I go to instann IE7 am tols that there is a newer version installed and installation aborts.

Hi, I'm having troubles uninstalling IE 8 with beta. I have Windows XP, but for some reason it seems to stop copying files during the uninstall at a file called ieencode.dll.000. I can't understand it and have run it for 40 minutes and have waited on phone with microsoft for 25 then gave up.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about or has had the same problem?
    Thanks, Sue
