Rather than double clicking on the pps file, go into PowerPoint and then File> Open and then open the file.
As long as it has not been protected you should be able to open and edit it.

This is the message I get when I try to open a file which had an extension .pps and I converted to .ppt according to the above instructions.
When I changed the file's extenstion I got this message :-
If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable.
Are you sure you want to change it?
Can someone help me please?
